Round 1 โ Organelle Recall
learn the job, not just the name. The nucleus controls the cell and holds the DNA; chloroplasts trap light for photosynthesis; the cytoplasm is the jelly where most reactions happen.
Round 2 โ Eukaryotic, Prokaryotic & Specialised
eukaryotic cells (animal, plant, fungi) have a true nucleus. Prokaryotic cells (bacteria) are much smaller and have no nucleus. Specialised cells are shaped for a job โ a nerve cell has a long fibre to carry impulses.
Round 3 โ Magnification Blitz
magnification = image size รท real size. Always convert both to the same unit first โ remember 1 mm = 1000 ยตm โ then divide.
Round 4 โ Division & Stem Cells
mitosis makes two genetically identical daughter cells with the same chromosome number as the parent. Stem cells are undifferentiated โ the ones taken from a human embryo are embryonic stem cells.
Round 5 โ Transport Sprint
diffusion is high to low concentration; osmosis is water across a partially permeable membrane; active transport moves substances against the gradient and needs energy from respiration.
Suggestions for teaching
- Keep it quick. Set a timer โ the point of a quick burst is fluent recall, not extended working.
- Little and often. Use these rounds as a warm-up or exit ticket rather than a full lesson.
- Fix the units. Remind learners to convert to the same unit (1 mm = 1000 ยตm) before dividing for magnification.
