Activities in this book
Round 1 โ The Control Loop
every homeostatic control system has the same three parts in order: receptors detect a change (the stimulus), a coordination centre (such as the brain) processes the information, and effectors (muscles or glands) carry out the response.
Round 2 โ Nerves & Reflexes
the central nervous system is the brain and spinal cord. Where two neurones meet there is a tiny gap, the synapse, and the signal crosses it as a chemical called a neurotransmitter. A reflex is automatic and fast because it does not involve the conscious part of the brain.
Round 3 โ Focus the Eye
light is refracted (bent) first by the cornea, then fine-focused by the lens onto the retina at the back of the eye. Changing the shape of the lens to focus on near or far objects is called accommodation.
Round 4 โ The Endocrine Glands
the pituitary is the "master gland" that controls many others; the thyroid (in the neck) releases thyroxine to control metabolic rate; the adrenal glands release adrenaline for "fight or flight".
Round 5 โ Glucose & Reproduction Sprint
insulin lowers blood glucose by making the liver store it as glycogen. In Type 1 diabetes the pancreas cannot make enough insulin, so it is treated with insulin injections. In the menstrual cycle a surge of LH triggers ovulation.
Suggestions for teaching
- Keep it quick. Set a timer โ the point of a quick burst is fluent recall, not extended working.
- Little and often. Use these rounds as a warm-up or exit ticket rather than a full lesson.
- Say the loop aloud. Have learners chant receptor โ coordination centre โ effector until it is automatic.
