Activities in this book
Section 1 โ Pathogens & Communicable Disease
communicable diseases are caused by pathogens: viruses (measles, HIV, TMV), bacteria (salmonella, gonorrhoea), protists (malaria) and fungi (rose black spot). Bacteria and viruses reproduce rapidly; bacteria may make us ill by producing toxins, while viruses live and reproduce inside cells, damaging them.
Section 2 โ Spread & Human Defences
spread is reduced by hygiene, isolating the infected, destroying vectors and vaccination. Non-specific defences come first: the skin barrier, mucus and cilia in the airways, and stomach acid. If pathogens get in, white blood cells of the immune system attack them.
Section 3 โ Immunity, Vaccination & Monoclonal Antibodies
lymphocytes make antibodies specific to a pathogen's antigens, plus memory cells for a faster second response. Vaccines carry dead or inactive pathogen. Monoclonal antibodies (higher) come from one type of cell (a hybridoma) and bind to one target โ used in pregnancy tests and to detect molecules.
Section 4 โ Drugs, Resistance & Plant Defences
antibiotics kill bacteria (not viruses); painkillers ease symptoms only. Overuse breeds resistant bacteria by natural selection. Many drugs began in nature (digitalis from foxgloves, aspirin from willow, penicillin from mould) and are tested in preclinical then clinical trials, often double-blind with a placebo. Plants defend with physical, chemical and mechanical adaptations (higher).
Section 5 โ Extended Exam-Style Application
exam questions reward joined-up biology: link each idea to a reason. For a 6-mark question, plan four or five clear points in a logical order, use the correct key terms (natural selection, resistance, mutation), and answer every part of the question.
Suggestions for teaching
- Nail the four pathogen types first. Make sure learners can name a disease for each type before moving on โ it underpins the whole topic.
- Separate the defences. Distinguish the non-specific barriers (skin, mucus, cilia, stomach acid) from the specific immune response (phagocytosis, antibodies, antitoxins).
- Tell vaccination as a story. Dead/inactive pathogen โ antibodies โ memory cells โ faster, larger second response โ herd immunity.
- Explain resistance as evolution. Random mutation, then natural selection of the survivors when antibiotics are overused.
- Model the 6-marker. Show how to plan four or five linked points in order before writing, and reward correct vocabulary.
