Activities in this book
Round 1 โ Pathogen Sort
four pathogen types: viruses (measles, HIV, TMV), bacteria (salmonella, gonorrhoea), protists (malaria) and fungi (rose black spot). An organism that carries a pathogen from host to host, like the mosquito for malaria, is a vector.
Round 2 โ Stopping the Spread
reduce spread by hygiene (hand-washing), isolating infected people, destroying vectors and vaccination. Airborne pathogens travel in droplets from coughs and sneezes; some pathogens spread through contaminated water.
Round 3 โ Body Defences Blitz
your non-specific defences: skin (a barrier), mucus and cilia in the airways, and hydrochloric acid in the stomach. When skin is cut, the blood clots to seal the wound and keep pathogens out.
Round 4 โ Immunity & Vaccines
white blood cells engulf pathogens (phagocytosis), make antibodies (specific to one pathogen) and make antitoxins. A vaccine trains the body to make antibodies and memory cells, so a later infection is destroyed quickly.
Round 5 โ Drugs Sprint
antibiotics kill bacteria but not viruses; painkillers only ease symptoms. Many drugs started in nature: digitalis from foxgloves, aspirin from willow bark, penicillin from mould. In trials a placebo is a dummy treatment used for comparison.
Suggestions for teaching
- Keep it quick. Set a timer โ the point of a quick burst is fluent recall, not extended writing.
- Little and often. Use these rounds as a warm-up or exit ticket rather than a full lesson.
- Bust the antibiotic myth. Drill that antibiotics kill bacteria but never cure a virus like a cold.
