Activities in this book
Task 1 โ Pathogens & Communicable Disease
a pathogen is any microorganism that causes a communicable (infectious) disease. There are four types โ virus, bacterium, fungus and protist. Learn a named example of each: measles and HIV (viruses), salmonella and gonorrhoea (bacteria), rose black spot (fungus) and malaria (protist).
Task 2 โ Spreading Disease & Body Defences
pathogens spread by direct contact, in water, in air (droplets) or through vectors like mosquitoes; good hygiene, isolating the infected, destroying vectors and vaccination all reduce spread. Your body defends itself with the skin (a barrier), mucus and cilia in the airways, and hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
Task 3 โ The Immune System & Vaccination
if a pathogen gets past the barriers, white blood cells attack it in three ways: phagocytosis (engulfing and digesting it), producing antibodies (which lock onto a specific pathogen) and producing antitoxins (which neutralise toxins). A vaccine introduces a dead or inactive pathogen so the body makes antibodies and memory cells ready for the real thing.
Task 4 โ Antibiotics, Resistance & New Drugs
antibiotics (like penicillin) kill bacteria inside the body but do not work on viruses. Painkillers only treat the symptoms โ they do not kill the pathogen. Overusing antibiotics breeds resistant bacteria. New drugs are tested in preclinical trials (cells, tissues, animals) then clinical trials on healthy volunteers and patients, often using a placebo in a double-blind test.
Task 5 โ Exam-Style 6-Marker
a 6-mark question rewards a clear, ordered explanation using the right key words. Plan three or four points, put them in a logical order, and use terms like pathogen, white blood cells, antibodies, memory cells and herd immunity. This is exactly the skill examiners look for.
Suggestions for teaching
- Nail the four pathogen types first. Make sure learners can name a disease for each (virus, bacterium, fungus, protist) before moving on โ it underpins the whole topic.
- Separate the defences. Distinguish the non-specific barriers (skin, mucus, cilia, stomach acid) from the specific immune response (phagocytosis, antibodies, antitoxins).
- Explain vaccination as a story. Dead/inactive pathogen โ white blood cells make antibodies โ memory cells โ faster, larger response next time โ herd immunity.
- Bust the antibiotic myth. Drill that antibiotics kill bacteria but not viruses, and that painkillers only treat symptoms.
- Model the 6-marker. Show how to plan three or four linked points in order before writing, and reward correct vocabulary.
