Activities in this book
Task 1 โ Cells, Tissues, Organs & Systems
living things are organised into a hierarchy: cells โ tissues โ organs โ organ systems. A tissue is a group of similar cells; an organ is different tissues working together; an organ system is several organs working together (like the digestive system).
Task 2 โ The Digestive System & Enzymes
digestive enzymes break big molecules into small, soluble ones: amylase breaks starch into sugars, protease breaks proteins into amino acids and lipase breaks lipids into fatty acids and glycerol. Each enzyme fits its substrate by the โlock and keyโ model, and works best at a specific temperature and pH.
Task 3 โ The Heart, Blood Vessels & Blood
the heart pumps blood around a double circulatory system. Arteries carry blood away from the heart at high pressure; veins carry blood back and have valves; capillaries are one cell thick for exchange. Blood is made of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and liquid plasma.
Task 4 โ Heart Disease, Health & Plant Transport
in coronary heart disease fatty deposits narrow the coronary arteries; stents hold them open and statins lower blood cholesterol. Non-communicable diseases such as cancer cannot be passed between people. In plants, xylem carries water up (transpiration) and phloem carries sugars (translocation).
Task 5 โ Exam-Style Extended Answer
six-mark questions reward organised, joined-up biology. Plan three or four clear points, use precise vocabulary (active site, denature, translocation, coronary), and always link a structure to its function. Answer this one on paper and mark it against the answer sheet.
Suggestions for teaching
- Build the hierarchy. Make sure learners can order cells โ tissues โ organs โ organ systems before naming tissue types.
- Drill the three enzymes. Link each enzyme to its substrate and product (starch โ sugars, protein โ amino acids, lipid โ fatty acids + glycerol).
- Use the lock-and-key model. Explain that heat or the wrong pH changes the active site shape so the enzyme denatures.
- Contrast the vessels. Compare artery, vein and capillary structure to function, and count the four heart chambers.
- Follow water and sugar. Separate xylem (water, transpiration) from phloem (sugars, translocation).
