About this resource and curriculum

Four demanding challenges push confident learners through mentally adding and subtracting two 2-digit numbers, adding three numbers and solving missing-number problems using the inverse, and multi-step word problems involving stickers, pupils, ribbon and money. Challenge 5 is an open investigation into why addition can be done in any order but subtraction cannot, asking learners to find their own examples and write a rule in their own words. Challenges 1–4 hold around sixteen auto-marked questions, and a full worked answer key covers every part, including model answers for the open investigation.

These four challenges are the stretch set — harder mental addition and subtraction with 2-digit numbers, missing-number puzzles and multi-step word problems. Challenge 5 is an open investigation: find your own examples and explain why addition can be done in any order but subtraction cannot. Show every bit of your thinking. Answer on screen and I’ll check it, or print the book and take your time on paper.

This is the greater-depth challenge workbook for KS1 addition and subtraction, for confident learners who want a stretch. The questions use mental strategies with 2-digit numbers and multi-step reasoning, ending in an open investigation into why you can swap the order of an addition but not a subtraction. Encourage your child to try real examples before writing their final rule, and talk Challenge 5 through together against the answer key.

A greater-depth, differentiated-up challenge book for DfE Year 2 addition and subtraction: mentally adding and subtracting two 2-digit numbers, adding three numbers, missing-number problems solved and checked with the inverse, and multi-step word problems. Challenges 1–4 hold around sixteen auto-marked questions building to greater depth; Challenge 5 is an open investigation into the commutativity of addition versus subtraction. Ideal for high-attaining Year 2 learners or as bridging practice towards Key Stage 2 reasoning.

Challenges 1–4 are checked together with the "Check my answers" button, which marks every response and gives feedback. Challenge 5 is an open investigation and is not auto-marked — check it against the answer sheet notes and model examples.

How to study with KS1 Mathematics: Addition and Subtraction — Challenge

This parent guide relates the page examples with a practical study routine. The current resource is labelled Mathematics, Key Stage 1, Year 2, Activity Book. Use that framework, the learning summary and published prompts to decide what successful work should reveal.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus jointly. Ask the learner to anticipate the knowledge, language or plan they may need. Scan each sample and spot instruction words, values, clues, conditions or new terms. Agree a focused time window, reduce diversions and collect useful materials such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an unaided initial attempt so the response reveals firm understanding and gaps. A short pause often supports remembering better than an immediate answer.

Make thinking published

Invite the learner to summarise the task in their own words. They can underline key information, divide a larger problem into shorter steps, sketch a model, arrange evidence, rehearse a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their approach fits and whether another plan could work. When work stops, provide a graduated hint: state again the goal, point towards a useful example, limit the choice, then model only the next step. Return control immediately afterwards. Spoken reasoning reveals mistakes and practises precise subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with published answer guidance after sustained effort. Inspect more than the final response: review the method, explanation, units, evidence, sequence, spelling or presentation where useful. Ask the learner to find the initial point where their reasoning changed path. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or separate space, followed by a short description of the improvement. For a correct answer, seek reasoning and one unaided check. This separates secure knowledge from guessing while strengthening accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the main idea, process or fact again. Create one small alternative by changing a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a comparable question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one precise next step, perhaps revisiting terminology, repeating a calculation, adding evidence or refining clarity. Recheck that target afterwards in the week because spaced review gives stronger information than immediate repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and complete answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide supports preparation, discussion and review.
