This guide is about mass and temperature and is for the adult helping you. Try one idea together; you do not need to complete this page independently.

This is a KS1 adult guide about mass and temperature. One idea to try together: With an adult, use kitchen scales to weigh 200 g of flour and ask your child to read the number in grams.

This guide has no on-page scored questions. A guide view or time on this page is not evidence of what your child knows, and this guide does not produce a child wrong-answer report. Keep a brief note of what you tried and what help was needed.

This guide helps adults support KS1 learners with mass and temperature; it is not a standalone pupil lesson. Suggest adult-supervised weighing with kitchen scales, where available, and ask how the child read the unit.

No pupil answers are scored on this page. A guide view or elapsed time should not be treated as a class diagnostic result.

After trying an idea together, ask the child to read the scale and explain what the number and g mean. Note any help given and choose a useful next step. Retelling the guide alone does not show mastery.

How to study with Measuring at Home: A Guide for Grown-Ups

This parent guide connects the page examples with a structured study routine. The current resource is labelled Mathematics, Key Stage 1, Year 1, Year 2, E-Learning Module. Use that framework, the learning summary and published prompts to decide what sound work should show.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus side by side. Ask the learner to anticipate the understanding, language or plan they may need. Scan each sample and recognise instruction words, amounts, clues, limits or less familiar terms. Agree a realistic time window, clear diversions and prepare suitable tools such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an self-directed opening attempt so the attempt indicates sound understanding and doubt. A concise pause often strengthens remembering better than an immediate answer.

Make thinking published

Invite the learner to summarise the task in their own words. They can underline necessary information, separate a complex problem into shorter steps, sketch a representation, organise details, compose a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their method fits and whether another plan could work. When movement stops, give a staged hint: state again the goal, point towards a useful example, narrow the choice, then model only the next step. Return responsibility straight afterwards. Spoken reasoning reveals mistakes and practises accurate subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with published answer guidance after genuine effort. Inspect more than the final attempt: review the method, explanation, units, details, sequence, spelling or presentation where useful. Ask the learner to identify the opening point where their reasoning changed direction. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or separate space, followed by a concise account of the improvement. For a correct answer, seek support and one self-directed check. This distinguishes confident understanding from guessing while developing accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the central idea, process or fact again. Create one small adaptation by altering a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a related question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one specific next step, perhaps revisiting terminology, rehearsing a calculation, adding details or improving clarity. Recheck that target again in the week because spaced review gives stronger information than immediate repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and make answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide strengthens preparation, discussion and review.
