About this resource and curriculum

Study guidance and sample questions

Get the most from this

This guide is about music and is for the adult helping you. Try one idea together; you do not need to complete this page independently.

This is a KS1 adult guide about music. One idea to try together: clap or tap a short rhythm, then invite your child to copy or change it.

This guide has no on-page scored questions. A guide view or time on this page is not evidence of what your child knows, and this guide does not produce a child wrong-answer report. Keep a brief note of what you tried and what help was needed.

This guide helps adults support KS1 learners with music; it is not a standalone pupil lesson. Suggest a short rhythm-copying game using hands or knees.

No pupil answers are scored on this page. A guide view or elapsed time should not be treated as a class diagnostic result.

After trying an idea together, listen for a copied or changed rhythm and ask what changed. Note any help given and choose a useful next step. Retelling the guide alone does not show mastery.

How to study with Music at Home: A Guide for Grown-Ups

This parent guide connects the page examples with a structured study routine. The present resource is labelled Music, Key Stage 1, Year 1, Year 2, E-Learning Module. Use that setting, the learning summary and published prompts to agree what successful work should show.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus together. Ask the learner to recognise the knowledge, vocabulary or method they may need. Scan each sample and recognise action words, quantities, clues, constraints or unfamiliar terms. Agree a manageable time window, remove distractions and collect appropriate equipment such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an unaided first attempt so the attempt reveals firm understanding and uncertainty. A quiet pause often aids recall better than an same-session answer.

Make thinking published

Invite the learner to summarise the task in their own words. They can underline essential information, break a extended problem into individual steps, design a representation, organise support, practise a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their route fits and whether another method could work. When work stops, provide a staged hint: repeat the goal, point towards a related example, reduce the choice, then show only the next step. Return ownership immediately afterwards. Spoken reasoning reveals mistakes and practises correct subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with published answer guidance after honest effort. Inspect more than the final attempt: review the method, explanation, units, support, sequence, spelling or presentation where related. Ask the learner to locate the first point where their reasoning changed direction. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or separate space, followed by a short note of the correction. For a correct answer, ask for support and one unaided check. This separates confident knowledge from guessing while developing accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the main idea, process or fact again. Create one small variation by changing a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a similar question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one specific next step, perhaps returning to terminology, practising a calculation, adding support or refining clarity. Recheck that target later in the week because spaced review gives stronger information than same-session repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and record answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide aids preparation, discussion and review.
