About this resource and curriculum

Children count small groups of objects, subitise amounts like 2 and 3 in a flash, match numerals to amounts, find one more and one fewer within 5, build finger patterns, and discover the composition of 5 as two parts like 4-and-1 and 3-and-2 using fingers, toys and snacks. Two plays are auto-marked on screen with instant feedback; the rest are hands-on drawing and playing tasks a grown-up can share, and the whole book can be printed with a full answer key. Gentle and playful with no pass-or-fail tone. High-contrast and large-text modes are available.

We are going to play five number games! Count little groups up to 5, spot how many in a flash, match numbers to amounts, play one more and one fewer on your fingers, and split 5 into two little parts. Answer on screen and I'll check it, or print the book and play with your toys. Ask a grown-up to help — this is just for fun.

This is a very gentle Reception (EYFS) maths book about deep number sense to 5. Sit alongside your child and use real toys, snacks or fingers. Let them touch and count each thing, spot small amounts in a flash, find one more and one fewer, and split 5 into two parts over and over. There is no pass or fail — praise careful counting and having a go.

A five-play Reception activity book building number sense to 5, working towards the EYFS Mathematics ELG — Number: counting objects to 5 with one-to-one correspondence, subitising 2 and 3, matching numeral to amount, one more and one fewer within 5, finger patterns, and the composition of 5 (4-and-1, 3-and-2). Plays 1–2 are auto-marked; Plays 3–5 are open, practical finger, drawing and home tasks. Playful and non-assessed in tone; suitable for guided or parent-led use.

Plays 1 and 2 are checked with the "Check my answers" button, which marks each answer and gives friendly feedback. Plays 3, 4 and 5 are open playing and drawing tasks that are not auto-marked — check them against the answer sheet notes and enjoy them together.

How to study with Numbers to 5 (EYFS)

This parent guide connects the page examples with a usable study routine. The listed resource is labelled Mathematics, Early Years (EYFS), Reception, Activity Book. Use that framework, the learning summary and published prompts to clarify what successful work should demonstrate.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus jointly. Ask the learner to predict the understanding, language or technique they may need. Scan each sample and spot command words, quantities, hints, conditions or less familiar terms. Agree a realistic time window, reduce diversions and prepare appropriate tools such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an independent first attempt so the response reveals firm understanding and gaps. A reflective pause often aids remembering better than an same-session answer.

Make thinking published

Invite the learner to restate the task in their own words. They can underline necessary information, divide a extended problem into individual steps, design a demonstrate, organise evidence, compose a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their method fits and whether another strategy could work. When work stops, give a staged hint: repeat the goal, point towards a related example, limit the choice, then demonstrate only the next step. Return ownership directly afterwards. Spoken reasoning reveals mistakes and practises correct subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with published answer guidance after genuine effort. Inspect more than the final response: review the method, explanation, units, evidence, sequence, spelling or presentation where related. Ask the learner to find the first point where their reasoning changed path. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or separate space, followed by a brief note of the improvement. For a correct answer, ask for reasoning and one independent check. This separates confident understanding from guessing while developing accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the central idea, process or fact again. Create one small variation by changing a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a comparable question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one clear next step, perhaps revisiting terminology, practising a calculation, adding evidence or refining clarity. Recheck that target again in the week because spaced review gives clearer information than same-session repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and complete answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide aids preparation, discussion and review.
