KS1 Science: Everyday Materials — Challenge is a stretching activity book mapped to the DfE National Curriculum for Years 1 and 2, pitched above the Quick Burst form for greater-depth learners. Challenges 1-4 hold around seventeen auto-marked questions using advanced vocabulary such as transparent, opaque and absorbent; comparing several materials at once to choose the most suitable one; explaining exactly why a material is unsuitable for a use; and reasoning about elastic behaviour when squashing, bending, twisting and stretching. Challenge 5 is an open extension task: designing a fair test, inventing a new material to a brief, and explaining reasoning using precise vocabulary. A full worked answer key, including model answers for the open challenge, is included alongside teacher, parent and pupil guidance.

This is a stretching KS1 science challenge book on everyday materials, designed for a learner who is confident with the basics and ready to go further. The first four challenges are self-marking and use harder vocabulary and reasoning than our Quick Burst form. The final challenge is open-ended — a design and explanation task best talked through together. Allow about 30 minutes.
A greater-depth challenge book for DfE KS1 science, Everyday Materials. Challenges 1-4 hold around seventeen auto-marked questions extending beyond core recall into advanced vocabulary (transparent/opaque/absorbent), multi-material comparison, explaining unsuitability, and elastic-behaviour reasoning. Challenge 5 is an open, non-auto-marked extension task covering fair testing and material invention to a design brief. Useful for greater-depth pupils, extension work, or an end-of-unit stretch task.
