About this resource and curriculum

Challenges 1-4 hold around seventeen auto-marked questions using advanced vocabulary such as transparent, opaque and absorbent; comparing several materials at once to choose the most suitable one; explaining exactly why a material is unsuitable for a use; and reasoning about elastic behaviour when squashing, bending, twisting and stretching. Challenge 5 is an open extension task: designing a fair test, inventing a new material to a brief, and explaining reasoning using precise vocabulary. A full worked answer key, including model answers for the open challenge, is included alongside teacher, parent and pupil guidance.

Five tougher challenges to stretch your everyday materials thinking — advanced vocabulary, comparing several materials for one job, explaining exactly why a material would not work, and reasoning about squashing, bending, twisting and stretching. Challenge 5 is open — there is no single right answer, so explain your thinking fully. Answer on screen and I’ll check Challenges 1-4 for you, or print the book to work through on paper.

This is a stretching KS1 science challenge book on everyday materials, designed for a learner who is confident with the basics and ready to go further. The first four challenges are self-marking and use harder vocabulary and reasoning than our Quick Burst form. The final challenge is open-ended — a design and explanation task best talked through together. Allow about 30 minutes.

A greater-depth challenge book for DfE KS1 science, Everyday Materials. Challenges 1-4 hold around seventeen auto-marked questions extending beyond core recall into advanced vocabulary (transparent/opaque/absorbent), multi-material comparison, explaining unsuitability, and elastic-behaviour reasoning. Challenge 5 is an open, non-auto-marked extension task covering fair testing and material invention to a design brief. Useful for greater-depth pupils, extension work, or an end-of-unit stretch task.

Challenges 1-4 are checked together with the "Check my answers" button, which marks each response and gives instant feedback. Challenge 5 is an open design and reasoning task that is not auto-marked — check it against the model answers and marking notes on the answer sheet.

How to study with KS1 Science: Everyday Materials — Challenge

This parent guide links the page examples with a practical study routine. The present resource is labelled Science, Key Stage 1, Year 2, Activity Book. Use that context, the learning summary and published prompts to clarify what effective work should demonstrate.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus side by side. Ask the learner to predict the understanding, language or method they may need. Scan each sample and recognise command words, quantities, signals, limits or unfamiliar terms. Agree a realistic time window, remove diversions and gather appropriate tools such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an independent initial attempt so the attempt indicates secure understanding and gaps. A quiet pause often supports remembering better than an same-session answer.

Make thinking published

Invite the learner to restate the task in their own words. They can underline essential information, break a extended problem into individual steps, draw a representation, organise evidence, practise a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their method fits and whether another method could work. When work stops, give a carefully scaled hint: state again the goal, point towards a related example, narrow the choice, then model only the next step. Return control directly afterwards. Spoken reasoning exposes mistakes and practises correct subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with published answer guidance after honest effort. Inspect more than the final attempt: review the method, explanation, units, evidence, sequence, spelling or presentation where related. Ask the learner to find the initial point where their reasoning changed direction. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or separate space, followed by a short description of the improvement. For a correct answer, seek reasoning and one independent check. This differentiates confident understanding from guessing while strengthening accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the main idea, process or fact again. Create one small alternative by altering a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a comparable question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one specific next step, perhaps returning to terminology, rehearsing a calculation, adding evidence or developing clarity. Recheck that target afterwards in the week because spaced review gives better information than same-session repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and make answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide supports preparation, discussion and review.
