Learning objectives

- hunt for objects whose names begin with a target sound;
- play I-spy with sounds — a game they can carry on anywhere, any day.
Activities in this book
Safari 1 — Listening Ears
sit very still together, cup your hands behind your ears like a safari explorer, and whisper each sound you catch. Quiet listening is the very first step of phonics!
Safari 2 — First Sound Spotting
say each word slowly and stretch the very first sound — 'sssss-un'. Say the sound (like 'sss'), not the letter name!
Safari 3 — Sound Hunt at Home
walk slowly round one room together saying 'sss… sss…' like a snake, and touch anything whose name starts with that sound. Sock! Spoon! Sofa!
Safari 4 — Tricky Sound Spotting
'i' and 'n' are quieter sounds, so listen extra carefully. Say 'i-i-ink' and 'nnn-ose' slowly, hand on your lips to feel the sound start.
Safari 5 — I-Spy Sound Games
play 'I spy with my little eye, something beginning with… sss' — always use the sound, not the letter name. Swap turns so your child gets to be the spy too!
Suggestions for teaching
- Say sounds, not letter names. Use the short, pure sound — "sss", "t", "p" (not "ess", "tee", "pee") — and keep it crisp without adding "uh".
- Read the words aloud. Your child does not need to read anything — you say each word slowly and they listen for the first sound.
- Stretch the start. Say "sssss-un" and "mmm… nnn-ose" so the first sound pops out before the rest of the word.
- Keep it playful and short. A minute of quiet listening, a quick hunt, a round of I-spy — little ears tire quickly, so stop while it's still fun.
- Sprinkle it through the day. First-sound games work at snack time ("b-b-banana!"), in the bath and on walks — no book needed.
