About this resource and curriculum

Study guidance and sample questions

Get the most from this

Explore the lesson one part at a time. Pause to try an example, then explain or show what you noticed. Ask for help if you need it.

Explore this interactive lesson together, or let the learner try it independently where appropriate. Pause to talk about an idea or try it in another way.

A lesson view or time spent is not a best quiz score or a saved wrong-answer report. Ask what the learner can show or explain.

Use this interactive lesson to introduce or practise an idea. For England, check the relevant national curriculum programme of study where applicable; a stage label alone does not establish alignment.

A view or elapsed time is engagement information, not evidence of a scored assessment or a list of misconceptions. Check understanding through discussion or an example.

Ask the learner to show or explain one idea, then try a fresh example with suitable support. Note any prompts needed; retelling alone does not show secure understanding.

How to study with Why Numbers Have Tens and Ones

This parent guide links the page examples with a usable study routine. The current resource is labelled Mathematics, Key Stage 1, Year 1, Year 2, E-Learning Module. Use that context, the learning summary and published prompts to decide what effective work should reveal.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus side by side. Ask the learner to identify the ideas, vocabulary or technique they may need. Scan each sample and identify command words, amounts, signals, conditions or less familiar terms. Agree a manageable time window, remove distractions and prepare useful tools such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an self-directed initial attempt so the work reveals sound understanding and doubt. A short pause often supports remembering better than an instant answer.

Make thinking published

Invite the learner to restate the task in their own words. They can underline essential information, divide a complex problem into individual steps, sketch a representation, organise evidence, compose a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their method fits and whether another strategy could work. When movement stops, give a staged hint: rephrase the goal, point towards a relevant example, reduce the choice, then model only the next step. Return responsibility immediately afterwards. Spoken reasoning reveals misconceptions and practises accurate subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with published answer guidance after honest effort. Inspect more than the final work: review the method, explanation, units, evidence, sequence, spelling or presentation where relevant. Ask the learner to identify the initial point where their reasoning changed path. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or separate space, followed by a short description of the improvement. For a correct answer, seek support and one self-directed check. This distinguishes secure ideas from guessing while strengthening accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the central idea, process or fact again. Create one small alternative by altering a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a related question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one clear next step, perhaps returning to terminology, rehearsing a calculation, adding evidence or developing clarity. Recheck that target afterwards in the week because spaced review gives stronger information than instant repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and make answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide supports preparation, discussion and review.

Why ten?
Look at your hands. How many fingers do you have? 🖐️ 🖐️ That's right — ten. Long ago, people started counting things in groups of ten because we each have ten fingers. That's why our number system is built on tens. Once you can count to ten, you can count to anything!
Bundles of ten
If we have 23 things, that's a lot to count one-by-one. So we bundle them up: 🟦🟦 + 🟧🟧🟧 Two bundles of ten = 20. Three loose ones = 3. Altogether: 23. The 2 is in the "tens place". The 3 is in the "ones place". That's why we call it place value — the position of the digit changes…
One more, one less
Numbers go up and down by one all the time. 23 → one more → 24 23 → one less → 22 It's easy when the ones place changes. But what about 29? 29 + 1 = 30. The 9 ones turn into a whole new ten! And 30 – 1 = 29. The ten "breaks back" into 9 ones.
