robot talk (saying sounds one at a time, like c…a…t), squashing the sounds together to hear the word, matching little words to pictures, and reading tiny 2–3 word phrases with a grown-up. About 20 gentle minutes.

Learning objectives

• orally blend spoken sounds — hearing c…a…t and saying cat;
• play robot talk games, listening to sounds said one at a time and squashing them together;
• match CVC words to pictures, connecting the blended word to its meaning;
• read their first simple 2–3 word phrases, like "a red hat";
• build the listening habits that make early reading feel like play, not work.

Activities in this book

1. Play 1 — Robot Talk: Squash the Sounds

   grown-ups: say each sound clearly with a tiny gap — s…u…n — then let your child squash them together and shout the word. Slower is better!

2. Play 2 — Match the Word to the Picture

   grown-ups: read the sounds aloud slowly, point to the picture, and let your child say the word before they type it. Any careful try deserves a cheer.

3. Play 3 — Robot Talk Games Around the Room

   keep robot words to three sounds — c-u-p, d-o-ll, s-o-ck — and say them while looking at or holding the real thing.

4. Play 4 — My First Little Phrases

   let your child sound out each word slowly — a… r-e-d… h-a-t — then say the whole phrase together like it is a tiny story.

5. Play 5 — Blending Builders at Home

   bath time, snack time and walks are perfect for robot talk — "time for the b…u…s!" Keep it short, silly and fun; stop while it is still a game.

Suggestions for teaching

• Say sounds purely. Keep each sound short and clean — "c" not "cuh" — with a tiny gap between sounds.
• Grown-up reads aloud. Your child does not need to read the instructions — you say the sounds, they say the word.
• Robot talk everywhere. Ask for real objects in sound-pieces ("pass the c…u…p") so blending is anchored to things they can touch.
• Swap roles. Letting your child be the robot is powerful — segmenting a word into sounds deepens their blending.
• First phrases. Sound out one word at a time, then re-read the whole phrase smoothly together so it sounds like talking.
