About this resource and curriculum

Children play robot talk games with a grown-up, orally blend spoken sounds into first CVC words like cat, sun and dog, match blended words to pictures, and read their very first 2–3 word phrases. Two plays are auto-marked on screen with instant feedback; the rest are hands-on listening and playing tasks a grown-up reads aloud and shares, and the whole book can be printed with a full answer key. Gentle and playful with no pass-or-fail tone. High-contrast and large-text modes are available.

We are going to play five sound games! A grown-up talks like a robot — c…a…t — and you squash the sounds together to say the word. Match little words to pictures and read your very first phrases. Answer on screen and I'll check it, or print the book and play together. Ask a grown-up to read each bit aloud — this is just for fun.

This is a very gentle Reception (EYFS) phonics book about oral blending — hearing sounds like c…a…t and squashing them into cat. You read everything aloud; your child listens and says the word. Keep sounds short and pure (say "c", not "cuh"), play robot talk with real objects around the home, and swap roles so your child gets to be the robot too. There is no pass or fail — praise careful listening and having a go.

A five-play Reception activity book covering oral blending and first CVC word reading, mapped to the EYFS Literacy ELG — Word Reading and Development Matters guidance: blending spoken phonemes into words, robot-talk oral blending games, matching CVC words to pictures, and reading simple 2–3 word phrases. Plays 1–2 are auto-marked; Plays 3–5 are open, adult-led oral and home tasks. Playful and non-assessed in tone; designed for a grown-up to read aloud, and suitable for guided or parent-led use.

Plays 1 and 2 are checked with the "Check my answers" button, which marks each answer and gives friendly feedback (typed words are checked regardless of capital letters). Plays 3, 4 and 5 are open listening and playing tasks that are not auto-marked — check them against the answer sheet notes and enjoy them together.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus jointly. Ask the learner to spot the understanding, language or technique they may need. Scan each sample and spot instruction words, quantities, clues, constraints or less familiar terms. Agree a realistic time window, reduce interruptions and collect suitable equipment such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an independent initial attempt so the attempt reveals secure understanding and gaps. A reflective pause often strengthens recall better than an immediate answer.

Make thinking published

Invite the learner to summarise the task in their own words. They can underline necessary information, divide a complex problem into individual steps, draw a representation, arrange evidence, practise a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their method fits and whether another plan could work. When work stops, offer a graduated hint: rephrase the goal, point towards a useful example, narrow the choice, then model only the next step. Return responsibility directly afterwards. Spoken reasoning reveals misconceptions and practises correct subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with published answer guidance after genuine effort. Inspect more than the final attempt: review the method, explanation, units, evidence, sequence, spelling or presentation where useful. Ask the learner to locate the initial point where their reasoning changed path. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or fresh space, followed by a concise account of the improvement. For a correct answer, seek reasoning and one independent check. This differentiates assured understanding from guessing while developing accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the core idea, process or fact again. Create one small alternative by changing a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a related question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one specific next step, perhaps returning to terminology, practising a calculation, adding evidence or improving clarity. Recheck that target later in the week because spaced review gives clearer information than immediate repetition.
