This guide is about position and direction and is for the adult helping you. Try one idea together; you do not need to complete this page independently.

This is a KS1 adult guide about position and direction. One idea to try together: Try the tidy-up directions game: place one item on, beside or below another and say where it went.

This guide has no on-page scored questions. A guide view or time on this page is not evidence of what your child knows, and this guide does not produce a child wrong-answer report. Keep a brief note of what you tried and what help was needed.

This guide helps adults support KS1 learners with position and direction; it is not a standalone pupil lesson. Suggest the guide’s tidy-up directions game to practise position words in context.

No pupil answers are scored on this page. A guide view or elapsed time should not be treated as a class diagnostic result.

After trying an idea together, ask the child to follow and explain one position or turn instruction. Note any help given and choose a useful next step. Retelling the guide alone does not show mastery.

How to study with For Parents: Position & Direction Games

This parent guide links the page examples with a practical study routine. The current resource is labelled Mathematics, Key Stage 1, Year 1, Year 2, E-Learning Module. Use that context, the learning summary and published prompts to decide what effective work should reveal.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus jointly. Ask the learner to identify the knowledge, language or method they may need. Scan each sample and identify command words, amounts, hints, constraints or unfamiliar terms. Agree a manageable time window, clear interruptions and prepare appropriate tools such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an self-directed initial attempt so the work indicates sound understanding and doubt. A reflective pause often strengthens retrieval better than an immediate answer.

Make thinking shown

Invite the learner to restate the task in their own words. They can underline essential information, separate a larger problem into individual steps, make a model, arrange details, practise a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their approach fits and whether another method could work. When movement stops, offer a graduated hint: repeat the goal, point towards a useful example, narrow the choice, then model only the next step. Return control straight afterwards. Spoken reasoning highlights confusions and practises correct subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with shown answer guidance after sustained effort. Inspect more than the final work: review the method, explanation, units, details, sequence, spelling or presentation where useful. Ask the learner to identify the initial point where their reasoning changed path. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or fresh space, followed by a brief description of the correction. For a correct answer, request justification and one self-directed check. This separates assured knowledge from guessing while developing accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the central idea, process or fact again. Create one small adaptation by adjusting a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a comparable question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one precise next step, perhaps reviewing terminology, practising a calculation, adding details or refining clarity. Recheck that target afterwards in the week because spaced review gives stronger information than immediate repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and complete answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide strengthens preparation, discussion and review.
