About this resource and curriculum

Study guidance and sample questions

Get the most from this

Explore the lesson one part at a time. Pause to try an example, then explain or show what you noticed. Ask for help if you need it.

Explore this interactive lesson together, or let the learner try it independently where appropriate. Pause to talk about an idea or try it in another way.

A lesson view or time spent is not a best quiz score or a saved wrong-answer report. Ask what the learner can show or explain.

Use this interactive lesson to introduce or practise an idea. For England, check the relevant national curriculum programme of study where applicable; a stage label alone does not establish alignment.

A view or elapsed time is engagement information, not evidence of a scored assessment or a list of misconceptions. Check understanding through discussion or an example.

Ask the learner to show or explain one idea, then try a fresh example with suitable support. Note any prompts needed; retelling alone does not show secure understanding.

How to study with Numbers to 10: A First Look

This parent guide connects the page examples with a usable study routine. The current resource is labelled Mathematics, Key Stage 1, Year 1, Year 2, E-Learning Module. Use that context, the learning summary and published prompts to decide what successful work should reveal.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus jointly. Ask the learner to anticipate the ideas, language or technique they may need. Scan each sample and recognise instruction words, quantities, signals, constraints or new terms. Agree a focused time window, reduce interruptions and prepare suitable tools such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an unaided first attempt so the work indicates secure understanding and gaps. A quiet pause often strengthens recall better than an instant answer.

Make thinking visible

Invite the learner to summarise the task in their own words. They can underline necessary information, separate a extended problem into smaller steps, design a show, arrange support, practise a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their route fits and whether another method could work. When movement stops, offer a staged hint: rephrase the goal, point towards a useful example, narrow the choice, then show only the next step. Return control directly afterwards. Spoken reasoning highlights misconceptions and practises correct subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with visible answer guidance after genuine effort. Inspect more than the final work: review the method, explanation, units, support, sequence, spelling or presentation where useful. Ask the learner to find the first point where their reasoning changed direction. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or new space, followed by a concise account of the improvement. For a correct answer, seek justification and one unaided check. This separates confident ideas from guessing while building accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the core idea, process or fact again. Create one small adaptation by adjusting a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a similar question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one precise next step, perhaps reviewing terminology, rehearsing a calculation, adding support or developing clarity. Recheck that target again in the week because spaced review gives better information than instant repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and capture answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide strengthens preparation, discussion and review.

Numbers are everywhere
🔢 Numbers tell us how many. How many fingers? How many steps? How many peas on the plate? Today we are going to look at the numbers from 1 to 10 — and the best part is, you already know lots of them!
Small amounts you just KNOW
🎲 Look at the dots on a dice. You don't count them one-by-one — you just know it's 3, or 5. That clever skill is called subitising. ⚫ 1 ⚫⚫ 2 ⚫⚫⚫ 3
Count your fingers
✋ One whole hand is 5. Two hands are 10. Your fingers are a number line you carry everywhere! Hold up 4 fingers. Now 7. Now 10. Fingers help us SEE how big a number is.
