This addition and subtraction guide is for the adult helping you. Try one idea together; you do not need to complete this page independently.

This is a KS1 guide for parents and carers about addition and subtraction. Read it first, then try this idea with your child: Hide part of a set of ten counters; ask how many are hidden, then uncover and count together.

Viewing this adult guide does not establish a best score, time taken or wrong answers for your child. If you use an on-page question, discuss the thinking and keep your own note of any support needed; do not treat an on-page score as an independent child assessment.

This KS1 addition and subtraction guide offers an optional home-support idea: Hide part of a set of ten counters; ask how many are hidden, then uncover and count together. Share it where suitable and ask families what the child did and how much help they needed.

The guide is not a standalone pupil assessment. A view of it is not evidence of a class-dashboard score or diagnostic record.

After trying the addition and subtraction idea together, ask the child to explain or demonstrate what they noticed. Note any help given and choose a useful next step; a retelling alone does not establish mastery.

How to study with For Parents: Helping with Addition & Subtraction

This parent guide connects the page examples with a structured study routine. The present resource is labelled Mathematics, Key Stage 1, Year 1, Year 2, E-Learning Module. Use that framework, the learning summary and published prompts to agree what effective work should show.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus side by side. Ask the learner to predict the understanding, terminology or method they may need. Scan each sample and recognise instruction words, quantities, hints, constraints or less familiar terms. Agree a focused time window, remove distractions and collect useful materials such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an independent initial attempt so the attempt reveals sound understanding and gaps. A reflective pause often supports remembering better than an same-session answer.

Make thinking shown

Invite the learner to restate the task in their own words. They can underline essential information, divide a larger problem into smaller steps, sketch a representation, sort evidence, compose a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their method fits and whether another method could work. When movement stops, provide a staged hint: state again the goal, point towards a related example, reduce the choice, then model only the next step. Return responsibility immediately afterwards. Spoken reasoning exposes misconceptions and practises accurate subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with shown answer guidance after honest effort. Inspect more than the final attempt: review the method, explanation, units, evidence, sequence, spelling or presentation where related. Ask the learner to locate the initial point where their reasoning changed path. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or new space, followed by a brief description of the change. For a correct answer, ask for reasoning and one independent check. This separates confident understanding from guessing while strengthening accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the main idea, process or fact again. Create one small variation by adjusting a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a related question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one specific next step, perhaps reviewing terminology, practising a calculation, adding evidence or developing clarity. Recheck that target again in the week because spaced review gives better information than same-session repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and complete answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide supports preparation, discussion and review.
