About this resource and curriculum

Its number activities offer practice related to the end-of-Reception Number and Numerical Patterns goals, alongside simple patterns and everyday position and direction language. Children count and recognise numbers to 10, subitise small amounts, compare groups to spot more, fewer and equal, and explore how numbers within 10 split into two parts. The first four activities are auto-marked on screen. The fifth is an open activity for learner or adult review. The whole book can also be printed. Includes teacher, parent and pupil notes and offers high-contrast and large-text modes.

Get the most from this

You're going to explore five number missions. Answer on screen and I'll check your answers straight away, or print the book and explore it on paper. Take your time — a good number explorer looks carefully!

This is a Reception (EYFS) maths activity book covering counting, subitising, comparing, number bonds and patterns. Sit alongside your child, use real objects like toys or snacks to count and split, and let them point and say each number out loud.

A five-mission Reception activity book supporting the EYFS mathematics educational programme. Number tasks provide practice related to the end-of-Reception Number and Numerical Patterns goals; simple patterns and position/direction language also build spatial reasoning. This is not an ELG assessment. Missions 1–4 are auto-marked; Mission 5 is an open home task. Suitable for guided or independent use.

Most pages are checked together with the "Check my answers" button, which marks every response and gives feedback. Mission 5 is open-ended and is not auto-marked — check it against the answer sheet notes.

How to study with The Number Explorer Book

This parent guide links the page examples with a usable study routine. The current resource is labelled Mathematics, Early Years (EYFS), Reception, Activity Book. Use that framework, the learning summary and published prompts to clarify what secure work should reveal.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus together. Ask the learner to anticipate the knowledge, terminology or method they may need. Scan each sample and identify instruction words, amounts, signals, constraints or less familiar terms. Agree a realistic time window, remove distractions and prepare appropriate tools such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an independent opening attempt so the attempt reveals secure understanding and gaps. A quiet pause often strengthens remembering better than an same-session answer.

Make thinking shown

Invite the learner to restate the task in their own words. They can underline essential information, separate a extended problem into shorter steps, sketch a model, arrange evidence, compose a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their route fits and whether another method could work. When progress stops, offer a staged hint: state again the goal, point towards a related example, reduce the choice, then model only the next step. Return responsibility directly afterwards. Spoken reasoning reveals misconceptions and practises accurate subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with shown answer guidance after sustained effort. Inspect more than the final attempt: review the method, explanation, units, evidence, sequence, spelling or presentation where related. Ask the learner to locate the opening point where their reasoning changed direction. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or separate space, followed by a brief description of the change. For a correct answer, seek justification and one independent check. This distinguishes confident knowledge from guessing while developing accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the main idea, process or fact again. Create one small variation by adjusting a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a similar question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one clear next step, perhaps revisiting terminology, rehearsing a calculation, adding evidence or improving clarity. Recheck that target afterwards in the week because spaced review gives better information than same-session repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and complete answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide strengthens preparation, discussion and review.
